STANDING PROUD

This is what pride looks like. About 1 in 10 adults in Jewish households in the New York area identify as LGBTQ.
We’re more committed than ever to funding projects so people who are LGBTQ have access to engaging and supportive spaces and resources.

The Meaning of Empathy

See how young people and counselors at Camp Ga’avah define what empathy means to them.

OUR IMPACT

  • Kids from ages 6 to 17 of all sexual orientations and gender identities will find a safe place for a fabulous summer at Camp Ga’avah on Long Island, New Country Pride Camp on Staten Island, and 92Y Camp Pride in Rockland County. These summer day camp experiences give kids the opportunity to celebrate Shabbat, participate in tikkun olam projects, and learn skills to better navigate their individual journeys. One camper, Max, had this to say about Camp Ga’avah, “It is a very free space, always accepting of people.” See the full story.
  • SVARA in New York offers virtual Jewish experiences and Talmud learning for queer Jewish New Yorkers. SVARA’s revolutionary method of learning is now spreading across New York Jewish organizations, including synagogues, JCCs, and beyond.
  • LGBTQ at-risk teens and young adults, ages 13 to 23, from across the religious spectrum can count on a safe and welcoming Jewish environment at the Drop-in Center of JQY/Jewish Queer Youth. The center provides access to licensed social workers, health resources, kosher meals, and the opportunity to be part of an affirming community.
  • For LGBTQ leaders on college campuses throughout New York, JQYU develops and supports their leadership skills in running programming for their peers.
  • And LGBTQ young people in Israel and New York find new connections through the Israel Gay Youth and Jewish Queer Youth Project, which brings New Yorkers and Israelis together to address shared challenges to create a more inclusive community.
  • Eshel, the organization supporting LGBTQ traditional Jews, has launched Soon By Q and Yenta Over The Rainbow. Eshel’s online site provides dating and matchmaking opportunities for LGBTQ Jews as well as compelling social experiences that create community in the New York area.
  • As a national leader in LGBTQ Jewish equality and inclusion training, Keshet is a valued thought partner, providing resources, skills training, and consulting to support LGBTQ equality and inclusion in Jewish community organizations in the New York area. "Keshet’s work with NYC synagogues has truly helped my synagogue engage in sacred wrestling as we seek to become ever more welcoming to LGBTQ+ community members, while also holding the diverse starting points of our congregants. The support Keshet offers creates opportunity for trust, learning, and ongoing connection, and we could not be more grateful." — Rabbi Emily
  • Eden Village Camp, in partnership with Gender Illumination, has implemented a series of trainings for staff to create a culture of inclusion at camp, including opening a non-gendered bunk for campers who prefer that space.
  • Ever vigilant, the NYLAG LGBTQ Law Project protects the rights of the LGBTQ community and provides legal services for low-income LGBTQ New Yorkers.
